Café & Clear PVC Blinds in Noosa
Keep the wind and rain out without losing the view. We measure, supply and install clear and tinted PVC café blinds for Noosa homes, decks and hospitality venues — from Noosa Heads and Noosaville to Peregian, Coolum and Cooroy.
What are café blinds?
“Café blinds” is the everyday name for clear outdoor blinds made from PVC. They got the name from cafés that used them to keep diners outside through winter, but these days most of the café blinds we install in Noosa go on homes: decks, alfresco kitchens, pool pavilions and balconies.
The idea is simple. PVC blinds stop wind and rain while letting the light and the view through, so an outdoor area you'd normally abandon on a blowy July evening stays usable. The two big choices are the type of PVC and how the blind is held in place, which we cover below.
Clear vs tinted PVC
Clear PVC gives you the most open outlook and suits east- and south-facing areas, covered alfresco spaces and anywhere the view is the priority, such as a Noosa Sound canal home or a deck looking over the river.
Grey tinted PVC takes the edge off glare and some of the afternoon heat, while keeping the outlook. It's a good fit for west-facing decks where late sun reflects off water.
Plenty of clients mix the two, or pair PVC on the weather side with mesh on the sun side. See swatches and more detail on our clear and tinted PVC fabric page.
Café blinds for homes
For houses, café blinds are usually about extending the season. A Tewantin family might enclose the back deck so the barbecue area works through winter; a Sunshine Beach unit owner might want the balcony protected from rain blowing sideways off the ocean. Because PVC doesn't breathe, it's worth planning ventilation: we'll often suggest leaving one side as mesh, or choosing a system that stops at any height so you can open a blind halfway on a warm day.
Outdoor café blinds for Hastings Street & Noosa Junction venues
Hospitality is a different job. Staff open and close the blinds every day, so operation needs to be quick and hard to get wrong, and the hardware has to cope with constant use, salt air and the occasional knock from a chair. For restaurants and cafés around Hastings Street, Noosa Junction and Gympie Terrace, we generally recommend track-guided systems, often motorised, with the PVC kept clear so passers-by can see in. Before we quote, check your lease and any landlord or body corporate rules about attaching to the building.
Track-guided (Ziptrak®) vs strap-down café blinds
| Track-guided (e.g. Ziptrak®) | Strap-down | |
|---|---|---|
| How it's held | Fabric edges run inside aluminium side channels | Straps and buckles to fixing points |
| Daily use | One-handed; stops at any height | Unbuckle, roll, strap up |
| Seal at the sides | Closed — no gaps | Small gaps; can flap in wind |
| Up-front cost | Higher | Lower |
Most of our Noosa clients choose track-guided blinds for the convenience and the cleaner seal. Read more on our Ziptrak® outdoor blinds page.
Wind and rain protection
PVC is a solid sheet, so it blocks driving rain and wind completely, but that also means it carries more load than mesh when the wind picks up. Track-guided systems handle this far better than strap-down blinds because the fabric can't pull away at the edges. Even so, in strong or gusty conditions, raise the blinds. If you're often away, motorised blinds with a wind sensor will do that for you.
Cleaning PVC in coastal conditions
Salt, dust and pollen settle on PVC quickly near the beach. Rinse the blinds with fresh water regularly, wash with mild soapy water and a soft cloth, and avoid abrasive pads, solvents and household glass cleaners. Let the blinds dry before rolling them up so trapped grit doesn't scratch the surface. Our step-by-step guide covers it in detail: how to clean clear PVC café blinds.
What café blinds cost in Noosa
Café blinds are priced per opening, just like our other outdoor blinds. As a guide, a manual track-guided blind for a typical opening starts at roughly $800–$1,400 installed, with larger spans and premium systems costing more, and motorisation adding about $400–$700 per blind. Commercial venues with wide openings or heavy daily use are quoted individually. We'll give you a written price at the free measure and quote.
Council and body corporate notes
In our experience, outdoor blinds on a private home don't usually need approval from Noosa Council, but it's always worth checking if your situation is unusual. Units and townhouses normally need body corporate approval before anything is fixed to common property; our body corporate guide explains what to submit. Venues with outdoor dining on a public footpath should check their dining permit conditions before enclosing the area.
Frequently Asked Questions
How clear is clear PVC?
Good-quality clear PVC is close to glass-like when it's clean and properly tensioned, so you keep your view of the river, the pool or the street. Tinted PVC is slightly darker but still easy to see through, and it cuts glare on sunny afternoons.
Will clear PVC café blinds go cloudy or yellow?
PVC ages faster when it's left dirty, cleaned with harsh chemicals or rolled up while it's gritty. Rinsing off salt regularly, using only mild soapy water and a soft cloth, and letting the blinds dry before rolling them up will keep them clear for much longer.
Can I leave café blinds down in strong wind?
Clear PVC doesn't let air through, so it takes more wind load than mesh. Track-guided blinds hold much better than strap-down blinds, but in strong or gusty conditions the safest move is to raise them. Motorised blinds can do this automatically with a wind sensor.
Do clear PVC blinds make the patio hot?
On a still, sunny day a fully enclosed PVC area can warm up quickly. Lift a blind or two for airflow, choose tinted PVC on the sunny side, or combine PVC on the weather side with mesh on the sun side.
Can café blinds be motorised?
Yes, track-guided café blinds can be supplied with Somfy motors, remotes and wind sensors. That's especially useful for hospitality venues where staff open and close the blinds every day.
