Folding arm awnings

Folding arm awnings are horizontal projection systems — they extend out over a deck or alfresco area and retract fully back when you don't need them. Because they use articulated arms underneath, there are no poles in the middle of your space.

They come in three cassette types:

  • Open (no cassette): lowest cost, fabric is exposed when rolled up
  • Semi-cassette: a hood over the top protects the fabric from above
  • Full cassette: the entire awning — fabric and arms — retracts inside an aluminium box. Best option for coastal locations where salt air is a factor

For large spans or hard-to-reach positions, a Somfy or Automate motor is the practical choice. You run it off a remote or wall switch. Adding a wind sensor means it will auto-retract if the wind picks up — useful if you're away from the property.

Awning Advantages

  • Massive projection spans with zero obstructive poles
  • Fully retractable to preserve nighttime starry views
  • Protects interior furnishings from severe UV fading
  • Significantly reduces indoor cooling and energy costs
  • Full cassette options for extreme coastal durability

Fabric options

The canopy fabric does most of the work. We primarily use Dickson Orchestra acrylic canvas for folding arm awnings — it's rated for UV and weather resistance and holds its colour over time. For vertical drop styles we also offer Vistaweave mesh, which cuts heat and glare while keeping a view through the fabric.

We'll bring fabric samples when we visit.

Manual vs motorised

Manual hand-crank awnings are reliable and cost less. They make sense for smaller awnings or situations where you'll always be on hand to operate them.

Motorised is the better option for large spans, hard-to-reach positions, or if you want the convenience of a remote or smart home integration. The Somfy RTS range is what we use — solid motors with good aftermarket support.

Pivot arm awnings

Pivot arm awnings are vertical drop systems that project away from the wall on an arm. Used mainly over windows and smaller openings where you want to shade the glass without fitting a full track blind. Common on heritage homes in Tewantin and older residential streets in Noosaville.

Auto-lock awnings

A simpler vertical drop design that locks at any height. Cost-effective option for west-facing windows, small alfresco areas and situations where you need basic shade control without motorisation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a folding arm and a retractable awning?

A folding arm awning is a specific type of retractable awning that extends outward horizontally over a patio or deck using articulated metal arms. Other retractable awnings include pivot arm styles that drop down at an angle over a window, or auto-lock vertical drop styles.

How wide can a folding arm awning span?

Our heavy-duty folding arm systems can span incredibly wide distances. Standard models comfortably reach up to 7 metres in a single continuous unit, with projections up to 3.5 metres. We can also couple units together for even wider restaurant or deck spaces.

Are motorised awnings worth the investment?

For most homeowners, absolutely. Manual hand cranks become tedious on large spans. Motorisation not only makes opening and closing effortless via remote or smart device, but it allows for the critical addition of wind sensors that automatically retract the awning to protect it from sudden gusts.

What fabric is best for a Noosa awning?

We highly recommend Dickson Orchestra acrylic canvas. It is marine-grade, heavily UV-treated, extremely colourfast, and features water-resistant coatings that effortlessly shed light rain while maintaining a premium, fabric-like aesthetic.

Do you install awnings for cafés and restaurants in Noosa?

Yes, we specialize in heavy-duty commercial awnings. From expansive alfresco dining areas in Noosaville to beachfront retail shops in Coolum, we provide robust shade structures that withstand high traffic and continuous daily operation.
